Job Description:

Design / Facility Engineer for existing or new structures, requiring a well-developed understanding of the design, requirements for regulatory approvals, operations, closure and decommissioning strategies, and ongoing support for construction, operation, surveillance and reporting

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other teams including Short and Long Range Mine Planning, Tailings Planning, Operations and Reclamation to understand plans, optimize designs and make geotechnical recommendations
  • Potential to develop into future Engineer-of-Record role with acquired experience
  • Work under direction of senior engineers to support geotechnical investigations and analyses including slope stability, seepage, liquefaction, hydraulic fracture, settlement, and freeboard
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior engineers
  • Prepare technical documents for regulatory reporting requirements and work scopes for new construction and to address remedial actions for existing structures’ integrity and dam safety
  • Perform surveillance of structures including site inspections, interpreting instrumentation readings, developing instrumentation scopes, writing reports and assessing lab/field test results

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Canadian Dam Safety Regulations (AER, CDA, MAC)
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Geological Engineering; Master’s degree considered an asset
  • Experience with slope stability and seepage analyses, and CAD programs (MicroStation or AutoCad)
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as a professional engineer
  • 5+ years of geotechnical experience within mining, tailings, and/or oil sands operations preferably related to the design, construction and monitoring of earthen dams
