Sr. Counsel

Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Operations & Employment Services, this position will provide strategic legal advice to PetSmart’s Canadian business team. You will analyze business objectives and provide legal support on a broad range of retail topics. This position requires the ability to provide advice and counsel on routine and complex labour and employment matters and develop, negotiate, and draft transactional agreements. In-depth knowledge of litigation risks and regulatory issues associated with the retail industry is a plus.

Job Responsibilities:

• Represent the Company in mediations, respond to attorney demand letters, and negotiate settlement agreements
• Develop, provide, and deliver proactive training to business professionals on a wide range of legal topics
• Provide advice and counsel to management and HR professionals on all aspects of day-to-day employment-related matters and labour matters
• Manage outside counsel resources and legal fees in accordance with budgetary commitments and an eye towards lowering PetSmart legal fees
• Assist in the drafting, implementation and enforcement of internal policies and procedures related to PetSmart’s business to ensure compliance with all Canadian laws, regulations, and legal standards
• Investigate and represent the company at the federal and provincial administrative level
• Research and advise business leaders on emerging legislative and regulatory changes affecting PetSmart’s business
• Manage litigation, develop strategy, facilitate discovery, and consult on key decisions
• Support PetSmart’s Ethics and Integrity and Compliance programs in conjunction with legal colleagues
• Serve as legal liaison to PetSmart’s Canadian business
• Review terminations and draft separation packages, when appropriate

Job Requirements:

• Prior experience as in-house counsel for a multi-provincial retail company is a plus
• Licensed member of the bar, in good standing
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required
• Knowledge of Canadian employment laws and experience with Canadian regulatory agencies
• Position located at the Canada Home Office in Burlington, Ontario
• Minimum of 5 years relevant experience required
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required
