Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform inspections of asphalt and concrete plants that are producing materials for use on City of Edmonton construction projects
  • Operate field and laboratory test equipment
  • Sample and test asphalt, soils, concrete, gravel and other related materials according to appropriate ASTM, AASHTO, CSA or other standards
  • Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City’s Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Complete preventative maintenance on lab and field equipment and ensure all equipment is properly maintained to ensure it is in good and safe working order
  • Perform field coring on asphalt mixes for thickness and compaction determination
  • Record test results and prepare standard test reports
  • Other related duties as required
  • Perform all duties in accordance with provincial and municipal Occupational Health & Safety regulations

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use Google Workspace
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent or higher, supplemented by some courses in Civil or Materials Technology from a recognized technical institute
  • Ability to understand and execute complex verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and record data with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to make decisions and perform work independently in a field environment
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position
  • Ability to perform the assigned tasks, such as repetitive bending and lifting up to 50 lbs (equipment, samples, etc), in various weather, environmental, traffic and construction conditions
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
