Job Description:

As an Urban Forestry Tech Supervisor, You will manage a team of Urban Forestry technicians and ensure effective team dynamics. You will be responsible for the implementation of the tree protection bylaw, other bylaws with tree protection or planting (e.g. street, land use) and, landscape design specifications for trees and development reviews. You will ensure consistent methodology for all tree valuation, tree risk assessments and compensation in support of development permits, claims against and damage to city tree assets.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with long term strategic plans and policies, develop and provide Tree Protection Bylaw updates.
  • Supervise Urban Forestry (UF) Technicians for consistent delivery (SOPs).
  • Monitor and balance work loads to manage competing service demands and priorities.
  • Oversee Health, Safety and Environmental requirements for staff.
  • Monitor, evaluate and regularly report on work progress, performance measures and annual program assessment.
  • Collaborate with UF Lead and UF Superintendents to create and execute annual work plans and review priorities in support of progressing the
  • City of Calgary Urban Forestry Strategic Plan.
  • Manage annual budget ($1M), spending plans and monthly accruals and tree compensation.
  • Perform recruitment, performance management, training, coaching, administering HR policies and assign emergency requests.
  • Conduct annual review of urban forestry requirements listed within the Calgary Parks Landscape Design and Construction Specifications.

Job Requirements:

  • A degree in Forestry, Planning, Horticulture, Science, Landscape Design or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of combined experience in reviewing commercial, residential, municipal capital or development plans, tree assessment in an urban environment and direct supervision.
  • You will have demonstrated leadership, negotiation, strategic planning, financial management and communication skills combined with strong political acumen.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • Current International Society of Arboriculture, Certified Arborist and/or Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) qualification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment will be considered an asset.
