Job Description:

Performs a variety of precise technical first order and special field surveys and performs associated technical calculations, including the downloading of computerized survey data, to determine any structural movement at dams and/or ground movement at surrounding reservoir slopes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of technical. design and administrative support functions and prepares deficiency lists related to the maintenance of dams, underground areas, associated structures and reservoir areas; designs non-routine equipment to assist in testing.
  • Installs, records readings from, troubleshoots and maintains a variety of electronic, mechanical and hydraulic civil (geotechnical and structural) instrumentation in dams, underground areas and reservoir slopes; conducts special experiments and tests; analyzes a variety of malfunctioning or faulty behavioral measuring devices and recommends corrective action including the use of alternate equipment.
  • Assists in developing maintenance standards for surveys and instrumentation required to determine structural movement and performance at dams and/or ground movement at surrounding reservoir slopes.
  • May provide work leadership responsibilities to and perform all or some of the functions of the Civil Surveillance Technician and Survey Assistant jobs; provides technical advice and guidance to survey crews.
  • Performs hydrometric, topographic and hydrographic surveys.
  • Evaluates and tests new equipment or models of proposed equipment.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance to field staff related to resolving dams operational and maintenance problems and performs an inspection of the facilities for unusual movement or water flow activity.
  • Develops basic computer programs for use in survey computations; analyzes output of programs to determine validity of results.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.

Job Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will have 2 years experience with geotechnical instruments, instrument calibration, weir and flume measurements, operation and maintenance of ADAS and familiarity with inclinometer systems.
  • Completion of a National Technologist Diploma in Civil, Instrumentation or Electronics.
  • Satisfactory performance on the job requires approximately 1 year on the job to acquire the additional knowledge/skills necessary to perform the full scope of the job.
