Job Description:

Safety performance measurement, analytics and reporting is a critical component of BC Hydro’s Safety Framework (i.e., safety management system). It enables us to more effectively manage safety risks, learn as an organization, and most importantly, help workers and the public go home safe.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with Safety and other business groups to improve effectiveness and service delivery of safety performance data to drive performance improvement and regulatory compliance.
  • Developing a long-term vision and strategy for Safety Performance & Analytics, including process, technology, initiatives, and team competencies.
  • Maintaining and continually improving the centralized, integrated, and standardized processes, management and architecture of safety data and records to ensure the organization has reliable, accessible, and legally sound information.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with key internal clients and stakeholders, including safety, operations, business planning, technology and finance stakeholders, other analytics functions across BC Hydro, and senior leaders.
  • Acting as the key point of contact on safety data management and systems, and safety performance measurement, analysis, and reporting.
  • Managing technology applications and analytical/reporting tools that provide decision-makers, stakeholders and other users with effective and self-serve safety performance and analytics information.
  • Leading, overseeing and preparing safety performance reporting, including required BC Utilities Commission performance reporting; the fiscal year BC Hydro Safety Performance Report; an enterprise safety risk profile; reviews and in-depth studies of safety data trends; and other regular reporting required within BC Hydro.
  • Developing and implementing short- and long-term roadmaps, in alignment with enterprise-level IT, for new and improved applications and tools that enhance BC Hydro’s utilization of safety performance information and analytics.
  • Leading and conducting predictive and trend safety data analysis to drive organizational safety performance improvement and regulatory compliance. This includes using predictive techniques to anticipate risks and opportunities, analyzing large datasets to identify trends at the enterprise and business function levels, initiating and leading studies to investigate identified trends, and articulating performance narratives.
  • Overseeing safety and business performance measurement and reporting to senior leaders, including facilitating development of key performance indicators, scorecards, and dashboards.
  • Establishing governance, standards, and best practices with respect to safety data management, data systems, analysis, and performance measurement. This includes ensuring that subordinates and processes adhere to these requirements.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with industry peers and external stakeholders such as Electricity Canada, with respect to safety performance measurement, reporting and analytics practices, and benchmarking.
  • Leading and directing a team of analysts (Move.UP) and professionals to deliver on the Safety Performance & Analytics work plan, including budgeting and resourcing as well as ensuring appropriate team and individual performance and development.
  • Responding to a variety of complex and potentially sensitive internal and external inquiries with respect to safety data analysis and reporting.
  • Supporting BC Hydro’s safety and business planning processes by providing analysis and recommendations with respect to setting, achieving, and measuring enterprise and business group safety priorities, plans, objectives, and targets.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of analytical tools (such as Power-BI, Tableau, SAS), data architecture and data provisioning will be considered an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communications, presentation, and report preparation skills. This includes being able to present and explain complex concepts that have been a source of misunderstanding.
  • Experience with safety or other relevant risk management systems and integrated business processes is highly desired.
  • Strong customer service ethic and attitude, as well as experience with stakeholder engagement to determine business requirements, as well as business case preparation and presentations.
  • Post-graduate degree will be considered an asset.
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as Business, Economics, Engineering, Social Sciences, Computer Science or Data Science. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with shared services delivery concepts and experience working and liaising with third-party vendors and service providers.
  • Strong influencing, relationship management and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills with a drive for discovering and implementing efficiencies.
  • A minimum of 8 years progressive related discipline experience that includes reporting, analytics, and performance measurement.
  • Excellent research and analytical aptitude and skills, and proven ability to understand, interpret and present data to decision makers and stakeholders.
  • Management and/or technical team leadership experience will be considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to lead and engage a team of professionals through coaching, mentoring, succession planning and career development.
