Job Description:
BC Hydro Engineering has an exciting opportunity for an Engineer to become part of the Mechanical Engineering Balance of Plant team based at BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. This position will be primarily focused on HVAC, Piping and Mechanical equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Engages operations and maintenance personnel to establish project end user requirements.
- Promotes and demonstrates safe work practices and advocates safety by design within engineering design.
- Delivers technical expertise in support of complex, high profile, and/or high capital cost projects and engineering studies or investigations to ensure that engineered solutions provide the appropriate balance of technical excellence, risk mitigation, and economic value while respecting interests of internal and external stakeholders.
- Acts as a technical lead or project engineer for HVAC and Piping projects.
- Prepares technical specifications, evaluates manufacturers’ bidding proposals, supports procurement activities, and leads review of manufacturers’ technical submissions.
- Provides a broad and demonstrated high level of professional experience in the field of Mechanical, HVAC and Piping Engineering for the hydroelectric power industry.
- Leads and actively participates in the development of engineering standards, design practices and guidelines.
- Acts in the role of Owner’s Engineer on behalf of BC Hydro, managing and enhancing relationships with equipment manufacturers and consultants and reviewing and accepting the work of project teams, consultants and contractors to ensure the work meets BC Hydro expectations, standards and best practices.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with other engineering disciplines and functions within BC Hydro.
- Demonstrates a passion for improving on the status quo.

- Demonstrates a courage to act and takes professional responsibility for owning engineering work.
- Provides technical guidance and leads engineering support of construction work and commissioning activities, which often requires travel to job sites.
- Develops mechanical design requirements for new and upgraded HVAC and Piping projects and evaluates alternatives to achieve the optimum combination of functional performance, reliability, cost and safety to maximum equipment life cycle benefits.

Job Requirements:
- Strong communications (verbal and written), technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills are required.
- Knowledge of HVAC components, piping and plumbing, ASHRAE design standards, and SMACNA ducting design standards is preferred.
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant engineering work experience with an in-depth engineering knowledge and experience in the field of HVAC and hydroelectric balance of plant mechanical systems.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
- An understanding of the interfaces of the HVAC systems with the Fire Protection systems and the ability to work with Fire Protection Engineers to develop the design of the HVAC and smoke control systems
- A degree in mechanical engineering recognized by Canadian universities.
- Experience in one or more of the following will be an asset (as they relate to HVAC design): project engineering, condition assessment, NERC cybersecurity/risk assessment, scoping and estimating, safety by design implementation, specification writing, IFC drawing preparation, bid evaluation, contractor design submittal review, quality acceptance check, field review, testing and commissioning, and for record drawing completion.
